In plain words
If you enquire in this way, it becomes clear that there is no Ānanda in these worldly things. Only in the turīya state is lasting Ānanda gained.
Students! All these worldly pleasures and riches are like passing clouds. Prema alone is lasting. Prema itself is God. So live in Prema. Youth is most sacred. But you are spoiling it with desires beyond all limit; you take part in needless activities, get caught in needless bonds, and land yourselves in trouble. Not for one moment does your mind have peace. Where does peace come from? Peace is not something to be found in the world. Peace is right within you. You yourselves are the embodiments of peace. So first of all know yourselves. Only then will you gain Ānanda.
Having read every kind of learning and grown very clever, the dull-witted man does not know himself in his own mind; however much he reads, whatever his station, the base man cannot leave his vices behind! Read and read again, and all he gains is argument; he never attains Jñāna that is whole. Why read all learning only to die at last? Learn the learning that knows no death!
Along with worldly studies there must also be spiritual study. All worldly things are such as pass away. Divinity alone is lasting. But people today forget Divinity, put their faith in the world and make many plans. That itself is great ignorance.
Once, when Śaṅkara was going with his thirteen disciples to bathe in the Gaṅgā, on the way he saw a brāhmaṇa sitting under a tree reciting Pāṇini's rule of grammar, “Ḍukṛñ karaṇe, ḍukṛñ karaṇe…”; he went up to him and asked, “My son, what joy do you get from this?” “Sir, I will become a great scholar, take shelter with a mahārāja and earn plenty of money,” said the man.
