Passage 13

In plain words

The belly is not what matters most to us. We must make the heart pure. We must develop the Jñāna in our head. That is ‘Jñānādevatukaivalyaṃ.’

Wherever you are, the remembrance of the Name must never fail

Students! You are learning many subjects. You are gaining great degrees. You take up jobs. You go abroad. With what aim are you doing all this? Śānti of mind is what you need. Without Śānti of mind, what is the use of earning however much money? There is no use. You can put this money in the bank. But in the very end you have nothing. We must recognise this truth well: ‘When they come, they do not come wrapped in even this much cloth; when they go, they do not leave even an address.’ In fact, if every man who goes had taken a fistful of earth with him, in our Bhārata even earth would have come under the ration. Nothing comes with us. Only the divine good and bad come with us. So we must do good and enjoy good. This is what students must recognise today. There is no use at all in this bookish knowledge. How many have studied, how many have become great, great scholars, and won great, great names and titles! But what use is it? And there are scientists who received great, great Nobel prizes. But no one took anything with him. Newton discovered that the earth has a power of attraction. He was a great scientist indeed! In the very end, what became of him? His head went wrong. He spent nine years in a mental hospital and died there. However much you study, what use is it?

He reads all the books and becomes very clever, yet the dull-witted man does not turn back and know himself; however much he studies, however he may live, the base man cannot give up his bad qualities. Probing study upon study, he gets only argument; he never attains full Jñāna. Why study all the books only to die? One must study the learning that knows no death.
