Passage 6

In plain words

But today's education is making children into demons. There is no humility or obedience in them at all. They fill their heads with what is in the books, pour it out on the examination paper, and come home with empty heads. Is this what education means? No, no. “Why read every kind of learning only to die? Learn the learning that knows no death.”

“Having read all kinds of learning and grown very clever, the dull-witted one does not know himself in his own mind; however much he has read, whatever his standing, the base man cannot give up his bad qualities; reading and reading again, he gets only argument and debate, and never attains full Jñāna.”

What is gained from such learning? What comes of argument and debate? The Ahaṅkāra of “I am a very learned man” begins. This very Ahaṅkāra leads to a downfall.

My life is My message

We must not forget the good that others have done us; we must show them fitting gratitude. But man sets out to do harm even to those who have done him good.

To do good to one who does good is nothing strange, when you think it through; to do good to one who does harm, never looking for his fault: he is the skilful one, O Sumati!

Even to those who have harmed Me I do only good. Those who reviled Me, those who mocked Me, even those who showed Me no gratitude: I love them all. That is why I said, “My life is My message.”
