Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Though he has read all studies and is very discerning, the dull-witted one does not know his own self in his heart.

What are all these studies? Only bookish knowledge. Through them we get no name or fame at all. What comes to us comes through the actions we do. We must enter society. Wherever there are sufferings of any kind, we must remove them. As far as possible, without going beyond our strength, we must keep on helping. Because Swami has said it, you must not go beyond your strength crying sacrifice, sacrifice. 'As big as the pot is, so much is the water; even if you want it, more will not come.' As big as our vessel is, so much water stays in it. If you want much water, it will not go into it. When you wish much water to gather, make the vessel bigger, make the heart broad. Only then will broad feelings grow in you.

Students! Many thoughts arise and spread over you. We must first discriminate these thoughts. Is it good or bad., right or wrong: we must discriminate in this way. Then we must enter into the divine work. Haste is not good. haste makes waste, waste makes worry. so dont be in a hurry. Take time over everything. Time is vast beyond any measure. Time itself is the form of God. We must not waste time. In this society today, whatever you do turns out wrong. Even if you do good, it turns into harm. We must think in what circumstances to do even good. We may do good even to one who does harm. But we must enquire how far to do it. I told you before: Muhammad Ghori came attacking Pṛthvīrāj seventeen times. But Pṛthvīrāj kept forgiving him and letting him go these seventeen times. What kindness! But this turned into kindness beyond limit. When it goes beyond limit, good sense is lost. That is why I say now and then: 'Measured eating, much ease; much eating, loss of wits.' But though he forgave him these seventeen times, there was no gratitude. The eighteenth time he came attacking Pṛthvīrāj again. He took the help of Pṛthvīrāj's brother-in-law. In the world this very thing has been happening from the very beginning. Bhārata has won independence but is not winning unity. It is through the lack of unity from the beginning that Bhārata has fallen into so many troubles.
