In plain words
Bearer of every form, the serene one; bearer of every name, the auspicious one; Saccidānanda, the One without a second: Satyaṃ, Śivaṃ, Sundaraṃ.
Embodiments of Prema! On Buddha Pūrṇimā it is not enough to talk about the Buddha and about the full moon. We must inquire into the Buddha's ideal and into the message He gave to mankind.
Śuddhodana had two wives. The first wife was Māyādevī; the second wife, Gautamī. To be blessed with children, the couple went on for a very long time performing many vratas, japas, tapas, yajñas and yāgas, ever so many of them. With the thought, “Who is there to rule this kingdom after me?”, Śuddhodana had no peace of mind night and day. He consulted many astrologers. Hearing them say that a child would surely be born, he went on feeling somewhat content. When some time had passed in this way, the couple's heart's desire was at last fulfilled. Māyādevī conceived. When the nine months were complete, she gave birth to a fine baby boy at a place called Lumbinī. They named the child Siddhārtha. But, sadly, within a few days of the birth Māyādevī gave up her body. Gautamī, Śuddhodana's second wife, looked on the child as her own son and brought Him up with the fondest love. That is why they also came to call the child Gautama.
