Passage 8

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

We must drive these wicked qualities far away. Only then do we become embodiments of Śiva.

Divinity is in all as the very form of the Ātma

Sarvarūpadharaṃ śāntaṃ sarvanāmadharaṃ śivaṃ Saccidānandarūpaṃ advaitaṃ satyaṃ śivaṃ sundaraṃ.

All forms are full of Śānti. The one in whose heart there is thought of God everywhere, at all times and in all places: that is śivaṃ. What is advaitaṃ? The form of Saccidānanda is Advaita. Our Ānanda is Advaita. This is Sat. Sat means that which exists for ever. This is sugar. Whatever you mix this sugar with, there is sweetness. Mix it in water, mix it in pāyasam, mix it in tea, mix it in coffee, mix it in anything at all. The sweetness stays sweetness: that is Sat. That is the eternal. What never changes is Sat, Being. Cit changes with many kinds of knowing. Perfect Jñāna in its very principle is Cit. Wherever it is put, it keeps on changing. In ignorance it is ignorance, in Vijñāna it is Vijñāna, in Sujñāna it is Sujñāna. The Jñāna that purifies everything is the Jñāna of the Ātma. That is spiritual Jñāna. That alone is spiritual learning. ‘Among all learning, the learning of the Ātma’, said the Gītā. This is like water. Water is water, sugar is sugar. Only while these two stay apart is Sat Sat and Cit Cit. Mix the two: it is not sugar, not water; it becomes pānakam. When Sat and Cit both arise in us, Ānanda arises in us. This Ānanda is like the pānakam made by the joining of Sat and Cit. Ānanda is like nectar. If we want to experience such Ānanda, we must attain the oneness of these two. That is the ‘Ekātma sarvabhūtāntarātma’ taught in the Bhagavad Gītā: what is in all beings is the one Ātma alone. In all the bulbs it is one and the same current. Each bulb may show a different colour, each bulb may have a different voltage, but the current is one! Divinity is in all as the very form of the Ātma. It is in all as the very form of Consciousness.
