Passage 4

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Only when ‘self-sacrifice’ is made does ‘self-realisation’ come. So, if you want ‘self-realisation’, there must be ‘self-confidence’. ‘Self-confidence’ is the ‘foundation’; ‘self-satisfaction’, the ‘walls’; ‘self-sacrifice’, the ‘roof’; ‘self-realisation’, the ‘life’. If the foundation is secure, the walls will be secure. If the walls are secure, the ‘roof’ will stand secure. Only when the ‘roof’ is secure can one live in that house. But today the foundation is not secure. Then how can the walls stand!

The strength of the Ātma alone is true strength

Today humanness survives, more or less, in Bhārata alone. That is why the country is safe and well. People of other countries are going through many kinds of trouble. “We have no sleep, no food. But the people of Bhārata are happy! They eat well, they sleep well!”: so people of other countries grow envious. Today the food man eats, the water he drinks and the air he breathes have become polluted. The misuse of science is the very reason for this. So we must not behave without discrimination in the name of science. We must make use of the strength that lies in humanness and make our time worthwhile. Nowhere is there anything greater than the power that lies in humanness. Who is God? Where is He? Man himself is God. “The moon was born of the mind; the sun came forth from the eye.” The strength of the Ātma alone is our true strength. There is nothing greater than the Ātma.

Having read every kind of learning and grown very wise, the dull-witted one does not know himself in his mind; however much he reads, whatever his state, the base man cannot give up his bad ways. Reading and reading over again brings only argument and debate; he can never attain full Jñāna. Why read all learning only to die? One must learn the learning that knows no death.
