Passage 5

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

A hovel of filth, a servant’s basket rotting with disease, a thing born to be stirred about, a tuber, a thornbush that cannot swim the sea of birth; a quiver of arrows: rise and see! Whenever we reflect, this body, do not trust it to be lasting, O mind; take refuge at the feet of Hari!

God’s presence alone they will not agree to approach. Why? ‘Saṅkalpa-vikalpakātmakaṃ manaḥ.’ Because the mind is forever with saṅkalpa and vikalpa, it is not fit to come into God’s presence. The day you restrain your saṅkalpas, that very day you become fit for God’s presence. ‘Mananātmakaṃ manaḥ’: you are forever thinking of one thing or another. What right has a mind filled with thoughts of other things to think of God? The reason is that man has only one heart! It is not a double sofa. Nor is it a musical chair. If one installs God alone in such a heart, there is no room there for other thoughts. Unfortunately, today we use our heart as a musical chair. For some days we give the seat to some people, for some days to others. Because we keep changing like this, our life is thrown into bewilderment.

The whole world is filled with Brahman

This whole world is filled with Brahman! And this world filled with Brahman is filled with karma! In truth, the creation of the world is itself a karma; the body that does karma is itself a karma; you yourself are karma.

Man is born of karma, by karma alone he grows, by karma alone he goes; karma is God to man, karma is the cause of joy and sorrow in this world.
