Passage 15

In plain words

The honour of the country is our honour; the prosperity of the country is our prosperity

Embodiments of Prema! Above all, hold our Bhārata dear! As important as the worship of God is, so important is love of the country. As Satya is the support for the progress of the individual, so nationhood is the support for the progress of society. Only when the country is well are we well. The honour of the country is our honour. The prosperity of the country is our prosperity. We must long for the prosperity of the country and the honour of the country. You must not live like a drop of oil on water, thinking, “Let the country go however it will; it is enough if I alone am well.” We must develop a broad outlook. The country is our country.

‘This is my motherland, this is my dear mother tongue, this is my faith’: unable to say this, beating his breast, is there a single being on earth who has lived so?

To betray Bhārata is to betray one's mother. Rāma said, ‘Jananī janmabhūmiśca svargādapi garīyasi’. ‘As My mother is God to My birth, so the land where I was born is equal to My mother,’ He said. Born in Bhārata, grown up in Bhārata, having drunk the Gaṅgā of Bhārata and eaten the food of Bhārata, if one gives no gratitude to Bhārata itself, how can the gratitude one gives to other countries be Satya? Whatever his country, a man must honour that country. We must develop the feeling of nationhood. Today it is because there is no feeling of nationhood that our Bhārata is breaking to pieces.

If we stay together, there is Mokṣa. We must stay together. One race, one tradition, one code: that is not a country. Only when many races, many cultures, many civilisations and many traditions come together does it become a country. That is the true country. In spirituality this is what is called ‘oneness in difference’, unity in diversity. In what way?

Beings are many, breath is one, Jewels are many, gold is one, Stars are many, sky is one, Nations are many, earth is one
