In plain words
Unless they spin out the time itself in this way, no fee comes to them. So you can think for yourselves what kinds of trouble are developing in technology. Morality and honesty are vanishing in man. Without this very morality and honesty, he is no man at all. So I hope that all of today's students will recognise this truth and live their lives in future in a way that is favourable, as people who bring Ānanda, with morality and honesty.
So put away the idea that we are learning for the sake of a job. Recognise the truth that we study for the sake of gaining Jñāna. We must put our life into something that helps others. We must look on our fellow men with Prema. These are the teachings of the gurus at this Convocation. You must love the parents who bore you, brought you up and made you grow. How many parents go through so many hardships, going hungry themselves so that their children may come up in life! So first of all, mātṛdevo bhava: regard your mother and father themselves as God, and make the right effort to make them happy. We must practise only those deeds that others can honour. We must not enter into work that would make us ashamed when others see it. We must honour our elders. We must love the country. Receiving good teachings of this kind, the students of those days would go home from these gurus' āśramas in sorrow, unable to bear their parting from them. The Convocations of those days taught them a life of great sweetness; and, set on the path of taking up this ideal in their own lives, they could not bear to leave, could not bear to leave, and drooped with the pain of parting. In that time of parting they tried to recognise the truth that life is a great towering wave, made of the clash of union and separation. The students wrote all those good teachings in golden letters on their hearts, bore them on their heads, and honoured them with great humility and faith.
But today, with a kind of unseemly behaviour amid riots and with distrust, they are bringing all the Convocations onto a path of anarchy.
Through a coarseness that knows no fear of sin, through that which knows no love of God, humanity has sunk away in human beings: this itself is the upheaval of the world's peace.
If fear of sin and love of God are both absent, the world turns into upheaval.
