Passage 5

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

We need not do any special practice for Ahiṃsā. It is enough to have any one of these.

Because of a boorishness that has no fear of sin, because of that which has no love of God, humanness has sunk in man; this is the upheaval against world peace.

One may be unlettered. One may not be a man of intellect. One may be a man without great cleverness. But it is enough to have the one thing, fear of sin. However much wealth, gold, goods and vehicles he has, if he has no fear of sin he is only a boor. He is just the same as an ignorant person. What is the reason? He has no fear of sin.

Once, Prahlāda is speaking to his father. 'Father! Why do you labour so? You kill men as one kills wild beasts in the forest. To enlarge your kingdom you resort to many acts of violence. What is the gain that comes from killing so many? It is not these you should kill.

He who has given in to the enemies within, how can he catch the enemies outside?

They are right within you, the great wicked ones. Who? Kāma, krodha, lobha, moha, lobha, mada and mātsarya. Keeping these six inner enemies, these wicked ones, you are killing the wicked outside. This is very wrong. It is kāma and krodha that we must kill first. Only when we kill them do we guard the fear of sin properly.

The second is love of God. What is the reason for Śānti disappearing from the country? It is the disappearance of both fear of sin and love of God. Wherever you look, in the forests, in the villages, in the towns, on the hills, wherever you look, upheavals keep growing. Wherever there are two, there is an upheaval. Patience and sympathy have vanished. Wherever there are two, there is a commotion. Many of you do not know it, but you have the experience. If there is one bangle on the hand, there is no sound at all. If there are two bangles, the sound begins.
