In plain words
Difference is made up by the mind
The God who is everywhere is ‘I’. In the one who loves is ‘I’; in the one who hates is ‘I’. Then who can love whom? Who can hate whom? Today, wherever you look there is unrest, wherever you look there is fear, wherever you look disasters are happening: and the reason? That we cannot recognise the oneness in all beings. Where are the differences? They are in our body. Where are they born from? They come through the mind. Before the wedding, who is the wife? Who is the husband? Before birth, who is the mother? Who is the child? These are what we make up for ourselves; otherwise no one has any relation to anyone. What everyone has is one relation alone: the relation of the one Ātma. “Truth is One; the wise speak of It in many ways.” There is water in this tumbler. The English call it ‘water’; the Tamils call it ‘tannīr’. However many names people give it, no one can change the water, can they! In the same way, however many names and forms we give, the divinity that is, is one.
The Eternal, who has neither death nor birth, without beginning, middle or end, the One who has no beginning, who is not born, does not die, and is not killed, that Brahman, abiding as the Ātma, is ‘I’.
The divine is not seen by the eyes of flesh
The body has death and birth, but the principle of Brahman called ‘I’ has no death and no birth. “My Ātma is the inner Ātma of all beings,” said Kṛṣṇa. If you understand this word ‘I’, there is no room at all for misfortune. In those days the Gopīs said:
Can we ever find You, Kṛṣṇa! Can we ever find You! You are subtler in form than the atom, far vaster than the vast; the eighty-four lakh kinds of living beings You never leave, at any time, they say; from the atom and the speck of dust to the blade of grass and the stick, You shine, they say, as the undivided form: can we ever find You!
“Kṛṣṇa! We have only eyes of flesh. With them we cannot recognise Your divinity. On the day we close these eyes of flesh and open the eye of Jñāna, on that day alone will we understand Your divinity,” they said. Many people go to temples, close their eyes before God and pray. Why should those who went to see God close their eyes? God is to be seen not with the eyes of flesh; He must be seen with the eye of the heart. There are many such sacred secrets in the principle of God.
