In plain words
Listening, singing, remembering Viṣṇu, serving His feet, worship, salutation, service, friendship and the offering of the self.
What is Śaraṇāgati? It is not merely offering our body to God. To keep remembering the Name is the mark of Śaraṇāgati. So Guru Nānak began the singing of the Name together, intending that people should remember the Name of God and make their lives worthwhile. The Name is the chief śāstra. You see it: many advertisements appear in the papers. All of them are things done in the hope of money! All such deeds done in the hope of money, name and fame are worthless! Money comes and goes, morality comes and grows. So develop your moral values. Only then will you gain purity of mind. ‘I performed a lakh of offerings. I performed a crore of offerings. The fruit has still not come!’ So some people sit and wait. That fruit will never come. All you gain is a passing satisfaction. Those who have money spend a great deal on many kinds of yāgas. But if some beggar comes to the front of their house, their hand draws back from giving him a handful of food. This is not right. God is not one to be caught with money. It is God who gives you money. What would He want with that money again? Use that money for your life here and for the life hereafter; give the poor and the needy the help they need. What wins Me for you is the Name alone! So remember the Name and make God your own. God is easily won by the remembrance of the Name alone.
God dwells in your heart
Where is God? He is in your own heart. Long ago, when the Kauravas set about shaming her in the crowded assembly, Draupadī: “O Dweller in Dvārakā! O You who roam Bṛndāvan! Will You not save me? Will You not protect me from this shame?” she cried out. But Kṛṣṇa did not appear. ‘O Compassionate One! O Merciful One!’ So she praised Kṛṣṇa in so many ways. Still there was no answer. At last she prayed, ‘O Dweller in my heart!’
