In plain words
Next, ‘don't waste time, time is God’: if we waste time, our very life is wasted. So, “boy! don't waste time, time waste is life waste,” they must be told. Children must be set on the path of putting every moment to good use. “Do not talk needlessly. talk less, work more.” This is what children must be told. It is because of too much talk that the energy in us is wasting away. Through this, memory is declining. Not only that, old age sets in very early. That is why all the holy great souls kept silence.
You must teach children well:
See no evil, see what is good, Hear no evil, hear what is good, Think no evil, think what is good, Talk no evil, talk what is good, Do no evil, do what is good, This is the way to God.
This is what they must be told. Such sacred ways must be taught to children from their earliest years. Only when the sapling is sound does the tree too grow well. If the sapling is crooked, the tree too will be crooked. That is why: Start early, drive slowly, reach safely.
With little words like these you must teach in a way that touches the children's hearts.
Next, the fourth. Don't waste energy. Through wasting it, children today are becoming very weak. It is because of this weakness that they cannot even listen to their parents' words. They are losing their way. They are turning into cars without brakes. “A bull that will not come under the yoke, a horse without reins, a life without mastery of the senses”: all these are like cars without brakes. Any accident may befall such people. So one must gain the strength that mastery of the senses needs.
Today's political leaders are all turning into madmen. If desire for another person arises in someone, then they must reflect. “What is in my body is the five senses; what is in that body too is the five senses. My body is nothing but filth and urine, stench, flesh and blood; that body too is just the same. Then why, why should I crave again the very things that are in me? So I do not need this. Everything is within me”: this truth must be recognised. The whole world is within your heart. When the eyes are opened the world is seen; when the eyes are closed nothing is seen. So each and every thing is only reflection of the inner being! This truth must go on being taught to children. Care must be taken that no harsh word of any kind comes from the children's mouths. “boys & girls! you can not always oblige but you can always speak obligingly. So speak kindly, gently, pleasantly”: this must be taught from childhood. When his mother starts to say something, the boy of today says, ‘don't talk, I know everything’. Who is the cause of this? The mother herself! Because from the very beginning that boy was not brought up in the right way. The moment they put the boy in school, parents think their responsibility is over. This is a great mistake. Parents too must bear their due share of responsibility.
Embodiments of Prema! Bearing many hardships, inconveniences, troubles and losses, you have taken part in this conference and have been showing forth a divine Godliness. This itself must be regarded as a sādhana. “Śarīramādyaṃ khalu dharma sādhanaṃ.” This body has come for just such sādhana. “Kaṣṭe phale.” Happiness lies in hardship itself. From pleasures there is no happiness. It is from hardships that happiness comes. This is what Vedānta says: “Na sukhāt labhyate sukhaṃ.” “Will the sugarcane give jaggery for the asking, unless it is crushed to pulp and its juice drawn out?” Even a diamond's value rises only when it is cut in many ways.
Without proper sleep and food at the proper time, you have gone through many hardships. But this is a part of service. “Tyāgenaike amṛtatva mānaśuḥ.” Sacrifice is vital for man. Prema and sacrifice, these two alone, are man's eyes. So whatever sacrifice you make, you must regard it as God's work. work will be transformed into worship. Whatever work you do, you must regard it as worship.
