Passage 9

In plain words

Only when there is that unity does purity, stainlessness, arise in every man. This very purity turns into divinity. … oneness of mind is very necessary. Oneness is very necessary. To develop this oneness, the principle of Prema is very necessary. By Prema we can achieve anything at all. Prema is God. God is Prema. It is by Prema that man must try to achieve everything. A small example. You may believe it or not. All these fifteen days, if I moved My leg it was like a big shock. In the morning I came out and walked about here and there; on seeing the devotees, in that Ānanda, their Prema becoming this Prema and this Prema their Prema, I forgot My body. The principle of God comes in … way. Living through Prema, giving Prema. In what is empty of Prema we cannot live through any Ānanda at all. The Gopīs too said so, it is told.

In the deserts without Prema, that the shoots of Prema may grow, with the rapture of Prema, that the nectar rain of Prema may pour, that the rivers of Prema may flow, play the song of Your flute; play the song of Your flute.

Kṛṣṇa, play Your flute just once. In what way, you ask? In the deserts without Prema, in these barren lands without Prema, within our hearts, that the shoots of Prema may grow: plant these shoots of Prema, these seeds, in them. Plant these plants called Prema in them. How will You plant them, Kṛṣṇa? With the rapture of Prema, that the nectar rain of Prema may pour, that the rivers of Prema may flow, play the song of Your flute. The rain is Prema itself. The earth is Prema itself, the plants are Prema itself. The planting is Prema itself, the flowing is Prema itself. Only when all is filled with Prema shall we attain, in the principle of Prema, oneness with Viṣṇu. That is, whatever we do, everything must be filled with Prema. If we pour pāyasam into a vessel, however many holes we punch in it, only pāyasam comes out of all the holes, not poison, does it? So if we change our heart into one filled with Prema, the work we do is Prema itself. The looks we cast are Prema itself, the things we hear are Prema itself, the work we do is Prema itself. Everything is as though filled with Prema. We try to change some outer objects, but we do not try to change that feeling which is the support and the supported of everything. We must try to take hold of what is the root and the key to everything. A king, so the story goes, wanted that wherever he went in his kingdom there should be no thorns, and he set many labourers to work picking out all the thorns.
