Passage 3

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

The people of Bhārata have gone on sharing their Prema even with the people of other lands. They regarded everyone as brothers and sisters and looked after them with Prema. The brotherhood of man, the fatherhood of God... The people of Bhārata alone have experienced both of these. That is why, however many times foreigners invaded Bhārata, the Prema of its people did not crack in the least, nor did it move from its place. Prema alone is the chief mark of humanity. Through Prema alone has humanity come to have such worth. To proclaim the principle of Prema, the Paramātma too comes down into this world. If we keep Prema alone in our hearts, the whole world will be in our hands. Prema is in you. But not knowing how it should be expressed, you are going astray.

Students! You read many books. You study many histories. But how much of the story of Śrī Rāma have you studied? Have you recognised at all the ideal brotherly love of Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa, Bharata and Śatrughna? First of all, develop a feeling of brotherhood towards all. Love even the person who hates you. When you see him, greet him with Prema: ‘Brother, how are you?’ When you address him as ‘Brother’, the hatred in him melts, turns to water and flows away. So make the feeling of Prema arise in you. Build up the strength of Prema. With Prema, nothing in this world is beyond achieving. Not knowing how to experience Prema, you turn it onto a path contrary to humanity and make it fruitless. Making a ‘waste’ of Prema looks to you like good ‘taste’. Prema alone is the chief power. Prema alone is the chief human value. When you fill your heart with Prema, everyone in the world turns into a sister or a brother to you. People hostile to you will not be seen at all. That is why the Gopīs prayed to Kṛṣṇa in this way:

“In deserts barren of Prema, so that shoots of Prema may grow, with the rapture of Prema, so that the nectar of Prema may pour down as rain, so that rivers of Prema may flow, will You not play the flute! Kṛṣṇa! Will You not make music!”

Embodiments of Prema! You are all made of nothing but Prema! Let your Prema flow. Hold Prema alone to be your very life. This alone is your chief duty. How have so many of you gathered here? My Prema has drawn all of you. That itself is the divine power of the magnet. When you join this ‘magnet’, you too turn into beings full of Prema. Whether in the Rāmāyaṇa, the Mahābhārata, the Bhagavad Gītā or the Koran, wherever you look, Prema alone is seen as chief. There is no property to be earned other than Prema. God, the embodiment of Prema, can be won over by Prema alone.

Students, embodiments of Prema! More important than learning, there must be Prema in you. Love is life; and not only that. Love is light, too. The light of Prema alone shows you the way. In this forest of life, thick with darkness, travel holding the light of Prema in your hand. However far you travel, darkness will not come near you. Love is God. Live in love. Today you must learn just this. You say that Prema itself is the Paramātma. But you do not live with Prema. From the soles of your feet to your head, Prema alone must keep flowing.

Today C. Srinivas, the present Vice-Chancellor, the former Vice-Chancellor... All of them spoke with their hearts filled with Prema. They are ringing the bells of Prema in your hearts. But you do not lend your ears to that divine sound at all. The moment you hear the sound of Prema, you must forget yourselves and merge in it.
