Passage 7

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Only the new one. All this respect is only for the newcomer. If it is an old friend, you sit with him saying, “Come here, you! Off you go!” You talk with him just as you please. You take him by the hand and pull him along. There is no ceremony of honour there, but there is more claim. Through this very claim, Prema too stays free. So only when there is freedom does Prema too come to us. As long as there is no freedom, Prema cannot come. If you want freedom, what must you do? You must be offered up. Neither “mine” nor “yours” should come in. I. The day “I, I” vanishes: that, they said, is Vedānta. The “I” must go. In place of this “I”, we must come to the state of “All is You alone.” For it is You alone who are the whole world. Seen or unseen, it is You.

Current is there on every side. When the switch is off, it cannot be seen. Just because it has gone from sight, you cannot say it is not there. Switch it on, and it is seen. So switching on and switching off is only a fault in your own effort; God is everywhere. Under the sway of Ajñāna, unable to switch it on, you say, “There is no light, there is no light,” and are deluded. There must be some fault. Or there must be some other reason the light does not come. For all of these there is a separate main switch. If this main switch is off and you switch on the lights room by room, the lights will not come. What is that main switch? It is divine Prema. Put on the switch called Prema, and Prema begins in every limb. In your words, words of Prema come. With your hands you do works of Prema. In your heart, feelings of Prema grow. In your eyes comes the look of Prema. With your ears you listen to things of Prema. In every limb, the very light of Prema shines forth. When we strive without that Prema, for nothing but selfishness and self-interest, every limb falls into darkness. That is why Prema alone is what matters most. We must make Prema grow in our hearts. We must make Prema blossom in our limbs. We must make the life of Prema grow. We must take Prema in through Prema alone. That is why all the Gopīs asked Kṛṣṇa for this very thing, it is said.

That sprouts of Prema may grow in deserts without Prema, That in a rapture of Prema a nectar-rain of Prema may pour, That rivers of Prema may flow, will You not sing The flute's song, O Kṛṣṇa, will You not sing!

All these are deserts without Prema. All these are sun-scorched, stony lands. A kind of barren land. What is to be sown in them is the seed of Prema alone. How must Your song be? It must be that full of Prema.
