Passage 1

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

In this land of Bhārata, supremely holy, forbearance itself is our beauty; of all vows, the one that has won the brightest lustre is a noble life of Satya, the hardest tapas; if you ask what feeling is sweetest in our land, what is more honoured than the feeling for a mother? That held honour alone greater than life, our country's code they have burned to ash, and, seeking out the codes of other lands, they have handed us today, in haste, the naked blade called a strange freedom. Ah! What shall I say of the rule of Bhārata! Just as the elephant does not know its own strength, so have the people of Bhārata become today.

Embodiments of Prema! Today we are rejoicing, calling it ‘Tamil New Year Day’. This is the year named ‘Svabhānu’. ‘Sva’ means the Ātma. Svabhāva means the nature of the Ātma. So, in this year named ‘Svabhānu’, man must follow his own innate svabhāva and begin a new life. Many new years have gone by till now. But new feelings are not arising in man. He is still passing his time with old, worn-out feelings.
