In plain words

He watched for one month only. That was enough. He was never one to spoil his health. Above all, out of his worry for Swami, with the constant thought of how the future must be shaped, he gave up food and meals. He made many plans about this future. Saralamma and Indulal Shah did not say so, but deep within they kept grieving greatly. They kept thinking mostly of Swami alone. Whoever tells them anything, they do not believe it. They did not lean on anyone else's beliefs. Their faith is their own.

So no one need think anything about Swami. Swami faces no danger of any kind. Whatever kinds of hardship and loss may come, Swami is the one who withstands them and pushes through. No one need grieve. No one need suffer. Swami will go on achieving everything. With a worldly body, with worldly food, some changes may happen. They are only passing; they are not permanent. So I wish you to be courageous. If I am like this now, what was the medicine? The prayers of devotees alone are My medicine. In this one month, whether in Madras, in Hyderabad, in Guntur or in Bombay, Bhakti and surrender have grown in many ways. In home after home they have done bhajans, repetition of the Name, tapas, and sādhanas of some kinds, in great measure. Only the fruit of the prayers they offered has made it possible for Me to stand and speak today. I did not ask for pain to come to the body, nor did I wish it to go. You alone wished it. What you wished, you yourselves have kept safe. This body is not Mine. This body is yours alone. You yourselves must look after your body. I am not the body. I am the indweller.

The body is made of the five elements; the body must fall some day; the indweller is free of every ill; consider: for the indweller, death and birth, the marks of the bonds and fetters of delusion, there are none; see the truth: that indweller is the God of gods; consider it in your mind: He is of the form of the Ātma!

The Ātma has no death or birth of any kind. It has no pains of any kind, no hardships of any kind. You may not believe Me when I tell you, but the doctors were much pained at the injury here. After something like this happens, one cannot walk for two or three years. To act as a joint, there is a ball. The ball broke into pieces. To set it right somehow, there are no muscles. And if we look at the bones, My bones are like diamonds. Joining them was not possible at all. Such hard bones are Mine. In the end, as nothing else could be done, they put in a rod and operated. After it is done this way, one cannot walk for a long time. To save this body, the doctors did all kinds of things. That is their duty. Beyond that, I showed no interest at all. It was only to give you My example. Not just now: for two years I have kept on giving teachings. You must reduce attachment to the body day by day. You must keep increasing attachment to the Ātma. You are embodiments of the Ātma, not embodiments of the body.

They keep coming to the body and going. Pains are for the body; they do not arise for the Ātma. It could not be moved. When it was moved, the pain was like a shock. I told the doctors, ‘Sirs! You are operating. This body is not Mine.’ When you take up renunciation, saying ‘This is not mine’, no pains of any kind arise. One small matter. However many people ask, they let no one but the doctors into the operation room. Determined, ‘Come what may, I must be with Swami, I must look after Swami Himself,’ he took a vow, and as they were taking Me in the van, he sat by My head.
